Merck: Reimagining mandatory training – ETU case study

July 27, 2023/in Compliance /by TED

Discover how ETU helped Merck to increase learner engagement and drive compliance behavior change through the use of immersive simulations for their mandatory training.

Science and technology company, Merck

OVERVIEW

Elevating Compliance IQ

Company: Merck & Co Inc.

Objective: Enhance compliance IQ among the Merck workforce, enabling them to make informed and compliant decisions daily.

Approach: Implement immersive learning on a Learning Simulation Platform (LSP) to revolutionize mandatory compliance training.

Outcomes:

  • Training became 15x quicker through immersive simulations compared to traditional instruction.
  • Observed a 21% boost in learner performance scores essential for risk mitigation.
  • Experienced a dramatic 97% decrease in errors within the safe confines of the simulation, preventing real-world risks.
  • 91% of participants confirmed the simulations were a valuable use of their time.

THE ISSUE

Revamping the Learning Experience

Merck aimed to transition from the standard click-through eLearning methods commonly used in compliance training. Their aspirations were:

  • Make learning relevant by presenting real-world dilemmas.
  • Emphasize behavior change, measure skills objectively, and place them in context.
  • Design learning to be continuous and efficient, especially for those showcasing the necessary skills.

The Mandatory Training program’s core aims were to:

  • Elevate engagement via state-of-the-art immersive simulations.
  • Maximize learner’s time using skill evaluations and customization.
  • Encourage behavioral evolution by enhancing compliance IQ.

THE STRATEGY

Customizable Learning for Varied Skill Sets
A dynamic team was formed to collaborate with ETU, ensuring prompt iterations and timely value delivery. The team’s collaboration helped validate the business logic behind the mandatory training overhaul.

ETU’s simulations track learning enhancements using a “Measure > Learn > Perform” cycle. Skill gap reduction starts with evaluation, guiding learners to resources that help address these gaps. The platform tailors its approach according to varying learner skill sets, following a testing and rectification loop until the learner achieves desired performance.

ETU’s platform, complete with an intuitive UI/UX, allowed the team to center their efforts on scenario development. This platform has an embedded skill measurement framework. Plus, the ETU Simulation Builder comprises tools that expedite scenario creation, review, and skill score adjustments.

To streamline the ETU platform’s usage, the team curated “The Mandatory Training Master Blueprint” – a guideline for crafting engaging, efficient learning experiences for mandatory training, ensuring consistency across roles and functions.

Accessibility was prioritized. Users could engage with simulations without specific hardware, ensuring universal accessibility. The simulations are also slated for translation into over 20 languages.

THE OUTCOME

Tangible Benefits from Immersive Simulations

The partnership’s success indicated the feasibility of swiftly introducing immersive learning via a simulation platform tailored for global corporations.

Key results include:

  • Training via immersive simulations proved 15x faster than traditional methods.
  • Skill performance scores rose by 21%, vital for risk control.
  • Errors in simulations plunged by 97%, pre-empting real-world risks.
  • 91% of users affirmed the time-value of these simulations.

The streamlined learning approach led to superior performance in less time. For instance, one subject (Incident Escalation) will result in savings exceeding $300k when implemented worldwide. Those showcasing optimal behaviors spent less time on the platform, while others, needing more practice, had that time allocated.

Collaboration with ETU also meant reduced production times, including reviews by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), ensuring optimal efficiency.
